4-H Youth Development
What is 4-H?
The purpose of the 4-H Youth Development program is to help young people discover and develop their potential and grow into competent, contributing, and caring citizens. Learn by doing activities, youth-adult partnerships, and research-based educational programs help young people enhance their leadership abilities and develop a wide range of other life skills.
In 4-H there is something for everyone. In Sacramento County we have 16 Community Clubs providing more than 50 different projects. We also have active camp and after school science programs. For a description of some of our programs, please check out the following links.

New Structure in Sacramento County 4-H
Last spring, members of the 4-H Futures Task Force examined ideas for what would help us improve and grow our 4-H program. Our new 4-H administrative structure is a product of acknowledging and addressing these needs as well as incorporating program and management functions we have in place.
The Sacramento County 4-H Program structure is built on the following:
- We want and need new volunteers in the 4-H Youth Development Program, and we believe individuals will choose to volunteer if opportunity matches their interests.
- Volunteers have both responsibility and authority to serve as middle managers in leading the 4-H organization and program.
- Leadership positions are clearly defined with a specified duration.
- Leaders are not elected, but rather apply and are selected for their roles.
- Everyone—adults and older youth, current member or new—is invited to apply.
Youth and adults on our new committees will have the opportunity to build skills (and resumes), meet new people, attend conferences, and contribute to building the finest 4-H program ever.
There are many volunteer roles from which to choose—from youth leadership to science programming, fund development to marketing, camping to clubs. Jobs descriptions and applications are available on this web site. Youth and adults who are interested in a position are encouraged to apply by September 30. Positions are opened until filled.
